What is Medicare?

Medicare is a federal health insurance program for most people age 65 or older, certain people with disabilities, and most people with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD). It is funded in part by Social Security and Medicare taxes that most people pay on their income, in part through premiums that most people with Medicare pay, and in part by the federal budget.

Medicare has four parts:

  • A

    Hospital
    Insurance

It covers inpatient hospital stays, care in a skilled nursing facility, hospice care, and some home health care.

  • B

    Medical
    Insurance

It covers certain doctors’ services, outpatient care, medical supplies, and preventive services.

  • C

    Medicare
    Advantage

This is a type of Medicare-approved health plan from a private insurance company that you can choose to cover most of your Part A and Part B benefits instead of Original Medicare.

  • D

    Drug Coverage

It helps cover the cost of prescription drugs(including many recommended shots and vaccines).
